Surfing has been around for what could be hundreds of years now and there’s historical evidence that shows it started mainly in Hawaii and became well known to other countries in 1915 when a well known surfer from Hawaii visited Australia and America.
When it comes to surfing holidays they are a very specialist type of holiday like any extreme sports holiday, but if you find the right place it could become more than just a surfing holiday. There are of course some places that are more frequented than others for this type of holiday for example Australia is well known for being one of the surfer’s central holiday places. Although if living in Britain you need not go as far a field because Britain is home to one of the most well known surfing destinations, Cornwall. Some of the best locations and services available there are;
Australia – This is one of the most famous destinations for surfing based holidays in the world. There are several beaches in the area that provide a surf base for any level of surfer from beginner to professional. These are all along the South Coast because along the North Coast there are stingers in the waters along with salt water crocodiles. However, some areas in the country are not well suited for beginners if you want to be able to get any waves this is because they are some of the best surfing areas such as Gold Coast. For the more experienced surfers you will be best suited to the West coast if you want more of a challenge this is because the waves around that area are more extreme.
There are also many different competitions held in the country through out the year so if you don’t fancy taking to the water you could go along and watch the action from a distance. On surfing holidays to Australia there are usually many other activities you can take part in whilst at the beach including snorkelling one of the best and most famous places being the Great Barrier Reef, scuba diving this is a very popular activity with visitors as it gives you the opportunity to the beautiful scenery that lies under the water as well as on top, sea kayaking is also fairly popular in Australia this enables you to see the city from a completely different perspective.
The great thing about having all these extra activities to accompany the surfing means you won’t ever get bored of just doing one activity through out your holiday.
Cornwall – It took slightly longer for surfing to become as popular in the UK around the 1950’s is when the sport became widely known. As well as some similar sports and activities listed above there are also things such as kite surfing to keep you entertained. As the name suggests it is very similar to surfing but instead of just relying on the waves to pull them through the water kite surfers have a kite that pulls them through the water, it is usually more experienced surfers that take up the sport as its very difficult because of the fact you have to control the board on the water and the kite in the sky.
